HBO has officially confirmed that it's working on a Game of Thrones prequel show revolving around the Targaryens, called House of the Dragon. Some of the more problematic aspects of “Thrones” have been reined in as well, probably at least in part because of the difference between premiering in 2011 and premiering in 2022. Sex and graphic violence are not as abundant in “House of the Dragon,” and they happen less as a matter of course; the nudity, especially, tends to be more stage managed and self-consciously tasteful, popping up like a diorama in a natural-history museum.

But he’s funny, articulate, and, as an outcast in his own family due to his stature, someone worthy of empathy. In other words, we’re not quite sure yet whether Tyrion is a good guy or a bad guy, but we know for a fact that he’s electric to watch because of the charisma Dinklage brings to the role.

But Daemon’s not necessarily someone whose presence you want to be in for very long. Even at his most devious, there is something appealing about Tyrion in the first episode that Daemon doesn’t yet have. And I’m not just saying that because the blond wig doesn’t quite go with Smith’s face.

HBO’s per-episode expenditure on “House of the Dragon” was reportedly even greater than that of the final season of “Game of Thrones,” but you wouldn’t know it to look at the screen. Dragons are more abundant in this earlier time period, but they feel more obviously computer-generated and less terrifying (in review screeners, at least). Cityscapes and isolated castles feel less grand, battle scenes less vivid. This may reflect a conscious decision to refocus and make a story on a different scale, but the comparisons are inevitable and unfavorable. Even Ramin Djawadi’s opening theme music feels familiar but cut down to size, as if the “Game of Thrones” theme started skipping after a few bars. “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s heavily hyped spinoff series, is saddled with respectability.

“The Blue Queen” is the steed of Prince Daeron Targaryen, a role that has yet to be cast in House of the Dragon. This she-dragon, who breathes blue flame, is said to be younger than Dreamfyre, Sunfyre, and Vhagar. This grey and white dragon is still relatively young during the Dance of Dragons, during which it bonds with Ser Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan). Seasmoke appears during the climactic battle against the Crabfeeder in Season 1, Episode 3. As we wait for House of Dragons to premiere on August 21, 2022, there's plenty of time to rewatch the original Game of Thrones.
